The American Red Cross is providing essential relief to survivors of dangerous storms and floods that have torn through some 24 counties in East Texas.
Throughout the region, individuals and families are reeling from the effects of repeated dangerous and destructive flooding that has destroyed or caused major damage to over 700 homes, including some that remain underwater. Many families have been displaced and are counting on the Red Cross to put a roof over their heads. Over 150,000 homes and businesses are without power as temperatures soar over 100 degrees, meaning even those whose houses remain habitable will turn to the Red Cross for a cool place to stay.
Our dedicated volunteers are working with partners to provide relief and comfort to flood survivors in their own neighborhoods and at our shelters, cooling centers and
distribution sites. To ensure people have enough to eat amid power outages, we are driving emergency response vehicles loaded with meals into devastated communities.
At our shelters and through mobile feeding, Red Cross and our partners have served about 28,000 meals and snacks to local residents. We’re also distributing relief supplies — such as tools and trash bags — on these mobile routes and at our distribution sites, helping people with the arduous process of cleaning out their homes.
With partners, we’re offering safe refuge to displaced residents at six locations, as well as respite from the dangerous heat at cooling sites. Tina Kaspers, her husband, their four kids and their beloved dog came to our shelter in Polk County after escaping rising waters in their home. “The staff is amazing, they have provided us with what we need and are always here to support us,” Tina said.
To help survivors get back on their feet, we’ve launched an Immediate Financial Assistance program. These funds help hard-hit residents make initial home repairs, replace clothing destroyed in the storm and take charge of their recovery. Our work is only beginning. People are facing the loss of their homes and their livelihoods, and recovery will take
time.
